By chance...

Don't most events in our lives happen by chance? I hope to share with you the chance observations and experiences of my travels. And I offer a chance for you to comment as well. Add to that my fond affection for my late cat, Chance, who was afflicted with feline leukemia and died of cancer, and you will see why "chance" has a special meaning in my life. By chance, the adventure continues and can be shared...

Spay or neuter!

This is Disaster. She didn't look too great when she showed up on our porch last spring -- hence the name. She was thin, her fur was missing in patches. But she was a love, we took her in, had her spayed and today she is a sweet love bug with a very soft coat.

She is just one of our kitties,  each of whom has found us over the years. And all of whom are spayed or neutered.
Today is World Spay Day, and I hope everyone takes seriously the absolute need to care for our pets -- and to be sure to have them spayed or neutered. I also hope that instead of heading to that pet shop or seeking out one of those "designer" pets, you will seek out a local rescue group like Stray Cat Blues or SPCA and offer a forever home to these deserving creatures.
It was back in 1995 that Spay Day USA was founded by the Doris Day Animal League and Doris Day  Animal Foundation. Now there are scores of groups that participate and events such as low and no-cost spay/neuter clinics, fundraisers and educational projects are held.
Be sure to do your part. Take a friend or two into your home, keep them healthy and spay or neuter. These critters add so much to our lives, ask so little and offer unconditional love.

Lend a hand. Open your heart and  home today.

Wish I could help these kitties...

Someone that my daughter knows has been presented with a problem: A mom cat and her kittens have taken up residence in their yard.
They aren't really tame, but will come to eat and play near the onlookers.
The SPCA doesn't want them because they aren't tame -- not adoptable.
Foster homes to tame them would be great. But who has time?
If anyone wants info, I can put you in touch. You can email me at nbreaux@thereporteronline.com
They are cute, aren't they?

Cat abuse unfathomable

If you need yet another dose of how horrible some people can be to animals, just read this Associated Press story.
I don't understand how this can happen.
And it's more than scary that teens can be this callous and violent. AND THEY TAPED THIS! Just think what they might do to another human being some day...

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Animal welfare officials in Philadelphia are alleging that two teenagers put a stray cat inside a microwave and tossed the appliance out of a third-story window.

Officials from the Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals say the cat survived but was taken for evaluation by veterinarians. They say the teens recorded the entire episode on a cell phone on Wednesday afternoon in the Juniata section of the city.

George Bengal, director of law enforcement for the Pennsylvania SPCA, told reporters that the teens had found the cat on the street four days earlier. He says the recording shows the events from start to finish, including the microwave hitting the ground. Bengal says officials hope the animal will survive. A dog was also taken from the home.

Luckily my "rescued" cats have nothing like this to fear.
This photo of Pokey basically sums up their "stressful" lives...
